The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District has decided to temporarily close select campsites at the Shenango River Lake after the discovery of a nesting pair of Bald Eagles.
According to the media release, biologists made the recent discovery of a nesting family of Bald Eagles with at least one eaglet in the Pine Loop of the campgrounds between campsites 106 and 108.
"We are committed to both conservation and customer service," said the supervisory resource manager at Shenango River Lake Bill Spring. "These bald eagles chose Shenango as their home because of the healthy habitats we maintain."
Bald Eagles are protected under "The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act," which was enacted in 1940 and the Migratory Bird and Treaty Act.
The buffer zone for the Bald Eagles encompasses 154 reservations across 58 campsites. There will be restricted access to areas within this buffer zone until approximately July when the eaglets fledge.
Campers who were a part of the 154 reservations within the buffer zone should expect an automatic refund.
This temporary closure will begin on Friday, May 9.
