The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is calling on the public for feedback on a proposed project to install a new sidewalk on Route 18 in Hermitage.
The project will span Route 18 between Highland Road and the Hermitage YMCA and calls for specific improvements to provide safety and connectivity for pedestrians, as well as ease of access in an area not previously connected.
The project will consist of the installation of approximately 1,116 feet of new concrete sidewalk on the western side of the roadway. It will require minimum grading changes, as well as a small retaining wall to create and maintain ADA accessibility.
Additionally, the project includes ADA-compliant curb ramps, traffic sign realignments and relocations and right-of-way acquisitions and existing driveway repairs.
The project is estimated to cost between $250,000 and $500,000 and will be funded through the federal Transportation Alternatives Set Aside program with the City of Hermitage serving as the sponsor.
No detours are expected during the construction period, but drivers should still expect lane restrictions and traffic controlled by flaggers as needed during construction.
Work is expected to begin in the 2026 construction season.
Anyone with questions, comments or concerns about the project can leave feedback here. You can also leave feedback by calling 814-678-7166,emailing kybarker@pa.gov or mailing it to 255 Elm Street, Oil City, PA 16301.
