The Ohio Attorney General's Office has accepted the petition title and summary of a proposed constitutional amendment to end property tax in Ohio.
The AG's Office received the petition titled "Abolishment of Taxes on Real Property" on May 1. A letter sent back to petitioners says the title and summary of the petition are "fair and truthful" statements to the proposed constitutional amendment.
Now that the title and summary has been approved, the next step is for the Ohio Ballot Board to determine whether the proposal contains a single amendment or multiple amendments.
If the Ballot Board certifies the proposal, petitioners must collect signatures from registered voters equal to at least 10% of the vote cast in the most recent gubernatorial election.
Those signatures must come from half of Ohio's 88 counties and the number must equal at least 5% of the vote cast in the most recent gubernatorial election for each of those counties.
If sufficient signatures are verified by the Secretary of State's Office at least 65 days before the election, the amendment will be placed on the ballot in the next regular or general election that occurs subsequent to 125 days after the filing of the petition.
