The Wellsville community is coming together to support the family and classmates of a 9-year-old Daw Elementary School student who died after being struck by a pickup truck in Columbiana County.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the Saturday afternoon incident on State Route 7 south of Beaver Local High School. Troopers reported that a Ford F-150 struck the Wellsville boy as he rode his bicycle from a private driveway. He was transported to East Liverpool Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The patrol has not yet released the child's name. The Lisbon driver stopped after the accident and was interviewed by authorities.

In the wake of the tragedy, Daw Elementary School announced on its Facebook page that additional counselors would be available to students and families in the coming days. The school is also facilitating donations to assist the family of the fourth-grade student who has siblings in the district.

"Our school community is grieving this profound loss, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the student's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the Facebook post stated. "For those who wish to support the family, we are collecting donations at the school to help them during this unimaginable time. Any contribution, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated."

The school urged the community to unite in support, saying, "Let’s come together with kindness and compassion as we navigate this loss as a school family."

Counseling services are available at Daw Elementary for any student or family member who needs support. Donations to the family can be made at the school.

Another Facebook post announced that Group Picture Day, originally planned for Tuesday, May 13, has been postponed until a later date to be determined.
