A minor earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.5 occurred in northeast Ohio late Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck at 10:48 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Its epicenter was located 4.2 miles east-southeast of Madison, Lake County, Ohio, at a depth of approximately 3.1 miles.
The tremor was also felt in areas around the epicenter, including 13.0 miles southwest of Ashtabula, and 13.8 miles east of Painesville.
According to the USGS, earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.0 and 3.0 are generally the smallest that are widely felt. While a magnitude 2.5 earthquake may be felt by some, particularly those in upper stories or resting, it typically does not cause damage.
Minor earthquakes are common and rarely cause significant impact.
