The Wellsville community is being invited to take part in a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening to honor the 9-year-old Daw Elementary School student who died Saturday after being struck by a pickup truck.

The vigil is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Wellsville High School football stadium. Candles will be provided.

Pastor Mark Blakeley will lead a service and prayer during the vigil. Organizers are also accepting monetary donations at the event to support the family of the child, who has only been publicly identified as Clayton and C.J. Attendees who wish to are invited to bring balloons or lanterns to release.

The fourth-grade student was riding his bicycle from a private driveway on State Route 7 south of Beaver Local High School on Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a Ford F-150, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported. He was taken to East Liverpool Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Lisbon driver of the pickup stopped after the accident and was interviewed by authorities. The patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Daw Elementary announced that additional counselors were available for students and families. The school is also collecting donations for Clayton's family, who have other children in the district.
