A Mahoning Valley Purple Heart chapter recognized high school students at a scholarship banquet at Leo's in Howland Wednesday night.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 606 works with the community foundation to distribute funds to local students.
According to the Military Order of the Purple Heart website, the student must be a direct lineal descendent (child, grandchild, great grandchild) of a Purple Heart recipient who is a member of the MOPH or a service member who was killed in action to be eligible.
The local group has raised over $100,000 for scholarships so far.
Six students were recognized Wednesday night with each receiving a $2,500 scholarship for the school of their choosing.
