Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 270,000 SUVs because of a potential brake line problem.
The recall affects 2022-2024 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Ford's review of assembly plant records indicates that 223,315 Ford Expedition vehicles and 50,474 Lincoln Navigator vehicles are potentially involved. The vehicles were produced between April 15, 2021, and November 20, 2024.
Ford said front brake lines in the affected vehicles may contact the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, potentially causing a leak. A brake line leak could lead to longer brake pedal travel and a reduction in deceleration. In more severe cases, a rapid or complete loss of brake fluid could extend the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The automaker said the front brake line may have been bent during the engine installation process at its Kentucky Truck Plant. Ford modified the radiator hose stowage process on November 20, 2024, to prevent this.
Drivers may experience increased brake pedal travel. A leaking brake line will cause the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir to decrease. When the level reaches the "Low" mark, the red brake warning indicator light will illuminate.
Ford said it is aware of 45 warranty reports of front brake line leaks between November 4, 2022, and April 8, 2024. The company also cited two field reports and two customer service reports. Ford reports no accidents or injuries related to this condition.
Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. Dealers will inspect the front brake line for proper clearances, routing, and retention. The brake line or air cleaner outlet pipe will be replaced as necessary, free of charge.
Ford was to notify dealers around May 14, 2025. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed between May 26, 2025, and May 30, 2025.
Vehicle owners can contact Ford's toll-free line at 1-866-436-7332 or their local Ford or Lincoln dealer for more information.
