Penn State trustees meet Thursday to discuss future of Shenango, other campuses

A report accidentally released by Penn State shows that trustees recommend closing the Shenango campus. The closures will be discussed at a special trustees meeting set for Thursday.

Jake Rickert, a Penn State Shenango alum and associate executive director of the Penn-Northwest Development Corporation, stated that a closure would be detrimental to the county.

"Having a Penn state branch campus in our backyard that's easily accessible to our residents, affordable [...] you know being able to walk away with a degree that has a Penn State name is huge," Rickert said. "It's important to our community that we [...] try to keep a Penn State presence here."

Mercer County Commissioner Bill Finley says if university trustees vote in favor of a closure, he doesn't want to see vacant buildings.

"I hope that the university puts the property on the market and sells it and doesn't just sit on it, leaving it empty." Finley said.

The special meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held via conference call on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. The public may join via the Microsoft Livestream by clicking the link listed below.
