President Donald Trump signs executive order aimed at cutting drug prices

As it stands, the U.S. consistently pays the most in the world for drugs, compared to other high income countries.

"Two thirds of the pharmacies spend everywhere is contributed but the United States, while we only have four percent of the population," CEO of Hometown Pharmacy Garry Mrozek said.

Some industry experts blame the inflated cost on prescription drug middle men, known as pharmacy benefit managers, or PBM's. Those PBM's were initially put in place to help control prescription drug costs but may have actually made things worse in some cases.

"What has happened is these PBM's will negotiate with drug manufacturers to get their product on formulary and then the rebate goes back to these PBMs," Stephanie Mrozek, pharmacist, said.

Put simply, insurance companies will sometimes have their own specific PBM's that deal with name brand drugs. Instead of saving you money this can actually further boosts the costs.

While many think President Trump's executive order aimed at lower prescription drug prices is a step in the right direction, it may not have as big an impact as some might hope.

"It's really too soon to tell if the way they execute the order will reign in these PBM's," Stephanie said. "We hope that's the case because they've been a struggle for all of pharmacy for a while now," she said.

For now, it's a waiting game to see how this will play out.
