Flames and smoke towered over a truck stop off Salt Springs Road and Interstate 80 early Monday as a semi-truck carrying candy caught fire.

The Weathersfield Fire Department responded to the Petro truck stop near the Interstate 80 interchange around 2:30 a.m. after the driver noticed flames on the back of the truck’s cab while pulling off the highway onto Salt Springs Road.

Fire officials said the flames spread after the driver exited the vehicle, which was heavily damaged in the blaze.

In addition, fire crews worked to contain diesel fuel leaking from the truck.

The driver was unharmed, and no firefighters were injured while battling the fire.

The semi-truck was loaded with a large quantity of candy, which was ruined by the fire. There's no word yet on what kind of candy was in the truck.
