A $1.4 million project to repair a bridge on Blacktown Road (Route 2006) over Interstate 79 in Springfield Township, Mercer County, is scheduled to begin next month.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Monday that the bridge, located on Blacktown Road between its intersections with Route 258 and Lee Road, is slated for repairs starting June 2, weather permitting.
The work will include repairing the concrete deck and placing a new concrete surface. Crews will also repair the concrete beams, piers, and abutments. Additional work includes paving on both sides of the bridge and updating the guardrail.
Construction is expected to last until October 2025.
The project will necessitate a road closure with a detour, which will be posted using Route 208 and Route 258. The detour is anticipated to be in place for approximately five months.
Built in 1963, the existing pre-stressed box beam bridge is currently classified as being in poor condition. Approximately 550 vehicles use the bridge daily, on average.
MEKIS Construction Corporation of Fenelton, Pa., is the contractor for the project. The contract cost is $1,424,307.77, funded with 80 percent federal funds and 20 percent state funds.
PennDOT urged motorists to plan accordingly for the upcoming closure and detour.
