Warren councilman sues Ohio Edison for broken streetlights

On May 16th Warren councilman Greg Greathouse filed a lawsuit against Ohio Edison, claiming the city had been overcharged for streetlights.

Greathouse says some of the lights have been out for months, but the city is still paying for them.

"It averages about eight dollars and seventy five cents per month, per light so that's 25, 28 thousand dollars a month that we pay Ohio Edison for those lights," Greathouse said.

However, some of them are consistently found not working.

"We find between 20 and 35 lights every month, new, that are burned out," Greathouse said.

The councilman brought this to Ohio Edison's attention but he said they still required full payment from the city.

"I've told them and told them and told them and told them so they know that that bill is inaccurate, they don't care, they want paid for the entire amount knowing that those lights are out," Greathouse said.

Greathouse is asking the courts for $852 to make up for the 3 dozen lights in his ward alone that weren't working but were paid for.

Additionally, Greathouse wants First Energy to change the way they run their business.

"My contention is. If I have to go out and notify you of when your system is broken down, then I ought to be getting an employee discount," Greathouse said. "Change the procedure. I shouldn't have to go out here and police your system. You should. This is your system," he said.

21 News reachd out to First Energy who said they couldn't comment on the pending litigation but urges people to contact them when a light is out on their street.

First Energy said and prompt notice would greatly assist them with making timely repairs.

The case will go before a judge on June 4th.
