South Avenue Sparkle location set to close in June

Another Sparkle Market location in the Mahoning Valley is set to close its doors next month after more than seven decades of serving customers.

According to a press release, the Sparkle Market on South Avenue in Boardman near Youngstown's south side is set to close its doors in mid-June. The store has been in business for 73 years.

"We thank everyone for their loyalty over the years. It's been an honor to serve this community for so long," said store owner Tony Modarelli.

Modarelli is quoted in the release saying this decision came as a result of ongoing financial challenges including rising costs and declining sales that made continuing operations unsustainable.

The store will continue to honor this week and next week's advertised specials, but after that, inventory will gradually be sold down ahead of closing. Customers are encouraged to visit during that time to take advantage of these savings and say goodbye to their community grocery store.

This is the latest of many Sparkle locations across the Mahoning Valley to close. Other recent closures include Salem and Niles earlier in 2025 and Craig Beach back in 2024. The Lisbon location also closed in 2020.
