A group of Pittsburgh Pirate fans from the Valley didn't make it to Thursday's home game after their limousine collided with a pickup truck, injuring eight people and closing a major roadway for more than three hours.
The crash occurred at 4:48 p.m. on State Route 51 at the intersection of East Palestine Road in Darlington Township, Beaver County, according to a public information release report from Pennsylvania State Police, Beaver.
Police say a Ford F-250 Supercab pickup truck, driven by a 17-year-old boy from Lisbon, Ohio, failed to yield at a stop sign while traveling north on East Palestine Road. The truck attempted to cross the southbound lanes of SR 51 to make a left turn when it was struck by a Lincoln limousine.
The limousine, carrying fans from Boardman, was traveling southbound on SR 51. The impact caused the pickup truck to rotate and strike the limousine a second time.
The 17-year-old pickup driver sustained minor injuries. His passenger, 18-year-old Ally Lemus of Negley, Ohio, also suffered minor injuries. The driver of the limousine, 84-year-old Francis McCowin of Hubbard, Ohio, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman, Ohio, with minor injuries.
In total, eight of the 11 people involved in the crash were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with varying injuries.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. State Route 51 southbound lanes were closed for three and a half hours following the incident.
