The driver managed to help three Youngstown City School students escape unharmed when their transport van caught fire early Friday.
The fire broke out in the van before 8:30 a.m. on the 2100 block of McGuffey Road. The Youngstown Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
Youngstown City School District officials confirmed the incident was caused by a mechanical issue, not an accident. They praised the driver's swift actions, which allowed everyone to exit the vehicle quickly and safely.
The district stated in an email that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire. The affected students were to be transported to their home school by the district.
