A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after falling from a second-story window at an apartment complex in Cortland, according to emergency dispatch records.
Police and firefighters responded to the incident reported just before 8:45 p.m. at the Pauni Apartments, on Liberty Blvd.
Dispatch notes indicate the caller reported a small boy fell from a second-story window. The caller also stated that someone had thrown a cat out of the window just before the child's fall. A couple living at the complex witnessed the event.
Melodie Hunter of Cortland, who frequently visits the complex to care for her elderly mother, said she captured video just weeks before the child fell, where you can see two kids waving out the window and Hunter called police.
After what happened to the child on Sunday, Hunter said she's angry because she feared this would happen for months after witnessing ongoing disturbances.
"...beer cans, water bottles, toys, screens, garbage, shoes, cats, children, everything coming out the window upstairs," she said, "Just to hear that a four-year-old fell out of a two-story window is very concerning."
Police confirmed there were two previous calls related to children at that apartment that came in on May 4th.
Officers responded and said the child was throwing toys and a cable out the window.
Police also said the window screen had blown off and wasn't replaced, but said the window was then locked at the time.
Police said they are investigating any possibility of neglect or unsafe conditions and that the case has been referred to Trumbull County Children Services.
21 News knocked on the apartment door where this occurred, but no one appeared to be home.
The boy, whose name was not released, was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. No further details on his condition were immediately available. The incident remains under investigation.
