The winner of the 21 WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee has been eliminated from the National Spelling Bee in the first round.
According to the results posted on the Scripps National Spelling Bee's website, contestant Daniela Lucia Pappalardo was eliminated in round one when she misspelled the word "mässig."
Marriam Webster defines mässig as a German word used as a direction in music.
Pappalardo is a 7th grade student at Canfield Village Middle School. She was declared the champion of the 21 WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee after she correctly spelled "tonada" correctly.
Pappalardo's family had previously told 21 News they believed her lifestyle and culture played a role in her success.
