A Warren man already in jail for a probation violation faces a new charge after allegedly making a threatening gesture toward an animal welfare advocate.

Randall Charlton, 45, was charged with menacing, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, according to Warren Municipal Court records. The charge was filed after Jason Cooke, president and CEO of Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, reported Charlton made a threatening gesture toward him following a court hearing Tuesday.

The incident reportedly occurred after Charlton's probation violation hearing, where a judge found him guilty of violating his probation from an animal cruelty conviction.

Charlton pleaded not guilty to the menacing charge during a Wednesday hearing. A no-contact order was issued, prohibiting Charlton from having contact with Healthy Hearts and Paws or any of its employees. His bond was set at $5,000, and another court hearing is scheduled for June 10.

Charlton was found guilty of a probation violation Tuesday and is scheduled for release from jail on Aug. 10. The violation stemmed from a May 4 visit to Charlton's home, where three dogs were found in the same pen where Oscar, an emaciated dog at the center of his initial animal cruelty charge, had been kept.

Charlton pleaded guilty to the original animal cruelty charge on April 15. He was sentenced to five days in jail, placed on three years' probation forbidding contact with companion animals, and ordered to pay a $100 fine.
