According to the events page on the Newton Falls Public Library website, the scheduled "Tornado Walk with Adreanne Foos" is fully booked as of Friday.
The event is scheduled for May 31 from noon to 1 p.m. It features participants walking along the roughly mile-long route taken by the May 31, 1985 tornado through Newton Falls, guided by Adreanne Foos.
On May 31, 1985, 41 tornadoes tore through southern Ontario, New York and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The areas hit the hardest were Newton Falls, Niles, Hubbard and Wheatland by an F5 tornado.
Although it is estimated that over 400 homes and businesses within Newton Falls were damaged or destroyed, there were no fatalities.
Citizens of Newton Falls credit Clayton Reakes, the former city safety service director, with sounding the siren on top of the Newton Falls Municipal Building that alerted residents of the tornado as the reason for no fatalities.
In 2022, a monument was dedicated in Newton Falls for the community, and as a memory for the 1985 tornado.
