Youngstown State University was awarded the Ohio Reach Postsecondary Designation by the Ohio Department of Higher Education for its continued support of students coming from foster care.

In conjunction with this designation, the YSU Office of the Dean of Students received a $2,500 grant for its efforts towards the support of students coming from foster care backgrounds.

This grant is planned to be put towards YSU's Fostering Penguins Program, which provides post-secondary support to students coming from a foster care background.

The media release states that Fostering Penguins looks to guide these students through the monotony of post-secondary education, teaching them about campus resources and overall making them feel motivated and at home at Youngstown State.

The Ohio Reach Postsecondary Designation is given to campuses that meet "foster-friendly" criteria.  Actions like naming a designated campus liaison, champions across several departments, community-building opportunities, targeted outreach and staff training for working with alumni in foster care.
