Mold risk prompts recall of 1.7M air conditioners

There is currently a recall on specific air conditioning units from the brand Midea due to their capacity to grow, accumulate and expose the consumer to mold.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been at least 152 reports of mold in these air conditioners including 17 reports of consumers experiencing symptoms of mold exposure.

About 1.7 million of these air conditioners were sold before this recall.

The air conditioning units on recall are from Midea's U line of air conditioners, specifically the U and U+ models. The units are white, 22 inches wide by 14 inches high and come in either 8,000, 10,000 or 12,000 BTU.

The recall applies to models of the same air conditioners under different brand names, such as Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Perfect Aire, Mr. Cool and Sea Breeze.

Listed below are the model numbers of the air conditioners on recall. The model number on these air conditioning units can be found on a label on the front of the unit to the right when facing the air conditioner.

Consumers who bought any of these units should call Midea for either a free repair or a full or prorated refund.
