Youngstown State University is launching a new online degree this fall to help students get jobs in the growing healthcare data field.
Starting in Fall 2025, YSU will offer a fully online Associate of Science in Health Information Management (HIM) degree. This program will teach students how to manage healthcare information, such as patient records, and ensure its accuracy and security.
Jobs in this area are expected to grow by 8% in the coming years. Professionals in Health Information Management play an essential role behind the scenes, working to ensure healthcare providers have the correct information for patient care.
The online program will teach students about managing healthcare data and how to code medical information. It will also help them prepare for national certifications, such as the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam.
Students will gain practical experience and can earn additional certificates, like medical scribe, to help them secure employment.
Sara Michaliszyn, dean of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, stated the program was developed to prepare students for future healthcare jobs. She noted it combines online learning with practical experience and pathways to careers.
Graduates can work in various settings, including hospitals, doctors' offices, and insurance companies. They could pursue roles such as health information technicians or coding specialists.
The program is suitable for recent high school graduates, adults, or working professionals seeking to start a career in healthcare or advance their education.
Applications for Fall 2025 are currently open. More information is available on the HIM program page on YSU's website.
