Warrants have been issued for a Warren couple charged with violating Ohio's companion animal law after an emaciated dog was found at their home. The dog, named Spud, is now walking after receiving food and veterinary care.

Shanel Aikens, 48, and Joel Charles, 45, both of North Leavitt Road NW, Warren, face charges of prohibitions concerning companion animals — deprivation of food and water, according to Warren Municipal Court records.

Jason Cooke, CEO of Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, said Tuesday that Spud, who was found severely emaciated on May 30, is now able to walk. Spud had been receiving care at the Animal Medical Care Center and Cat Hospital in Niles.

The dog was surrendered to Healthy Hearts and Paws, which then transported Spud to the animal hospital.
