Youngstown State University was designated as a Purple Star university in May of 2022. The Ohio Department of Higher Education renewed the university's designation after the three year window.
"I am so proud of YSU's commitment to their active military and veteran students. They first received this award in 2022, and I am excited to see that they have continued to serve our active military and veterans with care," said Rep. McNally.
The Purple Star designation is usually given to colleges and universities that commit heavy time and resources to their active military or veteran students and staff such as dedicated military/veteran point of contact, priority registration for veterans and servicemembers, and allowing those who serves the United States military to establish student-led organizations.
Ohio is the first state in the country to give a collegiate level Purple Star designation. The Purple Star was typically given to military friendly and accepting schools preK-12.
Among the non-collegiate Purple Star schools in the Valley are Austintown Fitch High School, Canfield High School, Trumbull Career Technical Center and many more.
