More than one million power banks from Anker have been recalled due to a potential burn hazard.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the lithium ion battery in the power banks can overheat posing potential fire and burn hazards to users.
So far, the CPSC has received 19 reports of fires and explosions from the recalled products including two minor burn injuries and 11 cases of property damage totaling over $60,700.
The recalled products were sold online via retailers like Amazon, Newegg and eBay, as well as Anker's website between June of 2016 and December of 2022 for about $27 apiece.
The recalled products have the model number "A1263." That model number, as well as the product's serial number can be found printed on the bottom of the power bank.
To check to see if your product is affected, you can enter your product's serial number here.
If your product is affected, you're asked to stop using it and contact Anker to receive a free replacement. You must submit a photo of the product showing the model and serial numbers, the date of the photograph and the word "recalled" written on the back of the power bank in permanent marker.
You must also confirm disposal of the recalled product. Consumers are reminded not to throw the power banks in the trash or recycling bins or even in used battery recycling boxes. Lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently due to a greater risk of a fire hazard.
Your municipal household waste (HHW) collection center may accept the recalled product for proper disposal. Consumers are urged to call their local HHW collection center to verify that they will accept the product. If it does not, consumers are asked to call their municipality for further guidance.
Consumers will be asked to show a receipt, but this is not required to receive a replacement.
