Police in two Trumbull County communities are investigating two separate cases of animals being abandoned in the past few days.
The first case comes from Niles when police responded to a home on Oak Forest Drive June 11 after a resident reported animals being abandoned in a neighboring home for about a week.
Police say the home in question was foreclosed and had since gone up for auction and that no one had been in the home for about five days.
According to the report, police found items thrown about the home including moldy food, animal feces all over the floor, no air conditioning and no access to food or water.
Police were only able to find one cat, but could not find a dog despite hearing one barking from outside.
Police returned to the house the following day with Jason Cooke of the Healthy Hearts & Paws Project. This time, police were able to retrieve the cat identified as Kiki and locate a labradoodle dog identified as Stormy under the frame of a bed upstairs.
According to the report, police were able to identify the previous owner of the home as Kayla Ferry and spoke with a man whose child was friends with Ferry's child.
That man told police his child saw the dog and cat in the house and got upset. Additionally, police say another neighbor told officers that Ferry had told him that she did not want the dog anymore.
According to the report, the neighbor took custody of the dog. Meanwhile, the cat was taken to Healthy Hearts & Paws and put up for adoption.
No arrests have been made in this case, but court records show that a warrant has been issued for Ferry's arrest.
The second case comes from Bazetta Township when police were called to McCleary Jacoby Road for a report of two dogs in a home that had not been attended to in four days.
Police described the home's conditions as "deplorable" noting that one dog was in a closed bedroom covered in animal feces from the floor to on top of the bed.
Police say there was no food or water for the dog in their room and the dog appeared to be emaciated to the point its ribs and spine were visible.
Police say a sunroom in the house was also covered in feces that appeared to be moldy and very old.
According to the report, officers found two dogs in the home, as well as one cat locked in the basement without food or water. Police say the cat was malnourished to the point where officers could feel its bones when they picked it up.
A Facebook post from Cooke reveals all three of the animals are now safe at the Healthy Hearts & Paws Project.
The report states that charges could be pending for the owner of the animals. Court records do not indicate charges have been filed in this case yet.
