The Youngstown City School District (YCSD) has announced that five students were selected for and completed the American Legion's Buckeye Boys State mock government program.

The week-long event was held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio starting on June 8 and was designed to "educate young men about the rights, privileges, duties, and responsibilities required for effective self-governance," according to the YCSD.

This was done by giving partipants the opportunity to run for elected positions such as mayor, treasurer, auditor, and more.

The selected individuals had to earn their positions by participating in party nominating caucuses at the city, county and state levels to earn support for their mock campaigns.

They delivered speeches engaged with other delegates from other participating schools, collaborated on legislation, heard court cases alongside a variety of other governmental activities.

The students that represented the YCSD are:

"It was eye-opening to realize how many individuals it takes to run a school district and how vital it is for everyone to work together," says William Wallace who was elected as the school district's mock superintendent.

"We are incredibly proud of our scholars for being selected to attend Buckeye Boys State," says real YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor.
