A 2.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in northeastern Ohio on Thursday, though it was unlikely to have been widely felt by residents.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake occurred at just before 1 p.m., centered about 2.6 miles south-southeast of Madison, Ohio, at a depth of 3.1 miles.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.3 are generally considered too weak to be felt by most people. Seismologists often describe events of this size as only being felt by a few people under very favorable conditions, such as being at rest or on the upper floor of a building. It's more likely to be recorded by seismic instruments than noticed by individuals.

The quake's epicenter was also approximately 11.6 miles east of Painesville and 14.8 miles southwest of Ashtabula.
