YNDC acquires old Park Inn building in Youngstown as part of revitalization plan

A few months ago, the Youngstown Neighborhood Development corporation acquired the former Park Inn building as part of their plan to revitalize the Glenwood corridor.

"As most people know we've been incrementally revitalizing, renovating, building along Glenwood avenue and the surrounding neighborhoods so this is something that we've had our eye on for years," Ian Beniston, YNDC's executive director said.

It was a $225,000 purchase and fixing it up is the next step.

"Our first order of business is stabilizing it so we are going to be replacing the roof, that should be starting within the next couple weeks," Beniston said.
There's no immediate development plan for the building just yet. The Foster Theatre is also on the list of buildings to revamp but Beniston said they've hit a few snags.

"We've gone through a couple iterations of plans for the building, unfortunately they've all been very costly so we're trying to figure out what our next step is with that project," Beniston said.

At the same time, several other properties are actively being worked on throughout the corridor.

"Just down the street three or four blocks we're building three more duplexes right next to where we constructed two," Beniston said. "The city is engaged actively in renovating the former bottom dollar just across the street from here, I believe they're going to be done with that fairly soon," he said.

Beniston told 21 News the entire Glenwood corridor project will continue to take years to complete.

"We just recently wrapped up in the last month the construction of six single family homes on Mineral Springs Avenue right across from the Youngstown Playhouse," Beniston said. "We're also wrapping up on Bernard, now called Cliffview, three more new houses. Last year we built three and sold them to homeowners on that street, the next couple weeks we'll have three more done. We're also renovating vacant properties," he said.

Ultimately, Beniston says the area will increase in value when the project is finished.
