As a heat advisory grips the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys, several locations are opening their doors to offer residents a cool escape. Public libraries, churches, and community centers are providing air-conditioned spaces, water, and amenities to help the community beat the heat.

All branches of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) are serving as designated cooling spaces through June 25. Residents seeking respite from the high temperatures can visit any branch during regular library hours to enjoy the air-conditioned environment. Meeting rooms at various locations will be utilized to provide additional space for community members. Visitors will also have access to drinking water and all regular library amenities and materials.

PLYMC branches acting as cooling centers include:

In Warren, Second Baptist Church has opened its sanctuary as a cooling center. Located at 1510 Main Ave SW, Warren, OH, the church will be open today, Tuesday, June 24, from 12 PM to 5 PM. This cooling center is especially aimed at elderly neighbors and those with health conditions who do not have air conditioning. Bottled water will be provided.

Additionally, in Mahoning County, Springfield Township Fire & Rescue has unlocked the doors to its Fire Hall at 3989 E Middletown Rd. The facility will be open during the day for community members needing a break from the heat, offering air conditioning and fresh ice water.

Across the state line in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, the Community Room at the Township Building (3439 Hubbard-Middlesex Rd.) is available as a cooling station. It features TVs and restroom facilities and will be open from 8 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also in the Shenango Valley, a cooling center will be open at the Primary Health Network building located at 55 Pitt Street in Sharon. Free water and snacks are available as well as access to restrooms. The center will be open on Wednesday, June 25 from 9 AM to 4 PM.
