A Warren woman has been charged in connection with the death of a dog found suffering from heatstroke earlier this week.
Shantia Bradford, 40, was charged Tuesday with prohibitions concerning companion animals — deprivation of shelter, a second-degree misdemeanor. The charge was filed in Warren Municipal Court, and court records show a warrant was issued for Bradford's arrest.
The charge stems from an incident Monday when a dog was found outside on Tod Avenue in extreme heat with no food or water. Temperatures at the time reportedly felt over 100 degrees.
The dog, suffering from an apparent heatstroke with a temperature of 108.5 degrees, was taken to the Newton Falls Animal Hospital. Jason Cooke, president and CEO of Healthy Hearts & Paws Project, said the dog later died.
Cooke reminded dog owners about local tethering laws that prohibit leaving animals outside in extreme heat without adequate shelter, food, and water.
