Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced a resolution calling on the Senate to formally nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The resolution cites what Moreno says was Trump's role in brokering a recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran.
Moreno stated that Trump's actions achieved "peace in the Middle East with Iran's nuclear arsenal decimated — all with no American boots on the ground, American casualties, or injuries." The senator added, "Now it's time for the world to recognize the obvious truth and award him the Nobel Peace Prize.”
The resolution, introduced in the Senate, argues that Trump's alleged success in ending Iran's nuclear weapons program without military personnel on the ground demonstrates "peace through strength." It also draws a comparison to former President Barack Obama's 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, noting controversial drone strikes during his presidency.
According to the Nobel Prize website, President Obama was awarded the Peace Prize in 2009 for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”. Emphasis was also given to his support - in word and deed - for the vision of a world free from nuclear weapons.
Nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize can be submitted by qualified individuals, including members of national assemblies and governments. The committee does not publicly confirm the names of nominees until 50 years after the prize is awarded.
The deadline for nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize was Jan. 31, 2025. There are 338 candidates nominated for the 2025 prize. The selection process involves the Nobel Committee creating a short list, followed by adviser reviews, with a final decision typically made in early October. The prize itself is awarded in Oslo, Norway, on Dec. 10.
