On Wednesday, a Public Safety Town Hall meeting was held at the Roosevelt Park Community Center in Campbell to educate residents on a variety of scams.

Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro and Campbell Police Chief Kevin Sferra came together to spread awareness of internet, email, text message and phone call scams. Topics included what to be cautious of, how to protect yourself and how to avoid being targeted.

Maro said within the past three months, the number of victims scammed out of thousands of dollars has increased. She adds scammers are continuing to find new ways to reach victims.

"I think it's critically important to spread awareness," said Maro. "The scammers are getting more creative, so we're trying to bring awareness to all the different options that are out there for people to be concerned about and avoid."

At the meeting, free safety tools were provided such as anti-fraud pens and gun locks to promote safety.

This past May, the Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office gave out free gun locks to encourage firearm safety and reduce gun-related incidents in the community.

Maro said they will continue to spread awareness of scams throughout Mahoning County as well as distributing gun locks.
