YOUNGSTOWN The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown has confirmed to 21 News that Ursuline High School is investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior involving members of the Ursuline football team during a trip in June.

A Diocese spokesperson provided a statement given to parents of students in the high school from the principal, Matthew Sammartino:

Dear Ursuline Parents,

At Ursuline High School, the safety, well-being, and character development of our students are our highest priorities.

We are currently investigating a report of inappropriate behavior involving members of the football team during a recent team trip. As always, we take concerns about student conduct very seriously and are committed to addressing them in alignment with our school’s code of conduct and the values we strive to instill in every student.

Parents of the students directly involved have been contacted, and we are working with the appropriate authorities to ensure a thorough and fair review of the situation.

In recent days, there has been increased attention on social media, including the sharing of blatant misinformation and speculation. We understand how difficult it can be when questions arise and answers are limited due to the need to protect student confidentiality during an active investigation. We respectfully ask for your support in speaking with your child about the importance of avoiding rumors, maintaining
respect for others, and demonstrating leadership during challenging times. We are committed to transparency and accountability and will provide updates when we are able to do so appropriately.

Thank you for your continued partnership and understanding.

According to the schedule on the Ursuline Facebook page, 41 players went on an 11-state trip from Ohio through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky. The team visited colleges and universities in Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, South Florida, and Tennessee.

As of Wednesday morning, that page has been deleted.

Youngstown police are investigating the incident and a diocese spokesperson said no employee is on leave while the investigation is conducted.

21 News is working to gather more information, including the location of the alleged incident.
