Police responded to a loose dog chasing Warren residents on Monday. The call ended with two dogs in custody and their owner being served a summons for gross neglect.
The officer on call made his way to 2091 Milton St. where he found a large brown dog barking at the side of the home.
He followed the animal to the backyard where he found a black dog chained to a dog house.
According to police records the house had been vacant since February after a tree fell on the building. It's possible the dog had been chained there for five months.
The officer called Jason Cooke, the leader of a animal rescue organization called Healthy Hearts and Paws, for assistance.
The two made their way into the back yard and found the animals in distress.
Both were panting heavily.
Bowls were found with no water and what little food that remained being spilled and mized into the dirt.
The brown dog had open wounds on both ears covered in flies and the black dog was malnourished with its ribs showing, patches of fur missing and covered in what the officer described as "a wall of flies."
Cooke, already familiar with the dogs' owner, called him and asked him to come to their location.
When he arrived they argued over the dogs' conditions before the officer told him the dogs would be seized and wrote him a summons to appear in court for animal cruelty due to gross negligence.
The dogs were placed in Cooke's custody and taken back to Healthy Hearts and Paws for treatment.
