YOUNGSTOWN An Ashtabula County motorcyclist died Thursday night after a crash on Youngstown's West Side following a high-speed chase that began in Trumbull County.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., an Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper began chasing a Yamaha motorcycle south on Route 11 in Liberty near the Interstate 80 interchange with speeds over 100 miles per hour.

OSP says the chase began after the trooper tried to pull the motorcyclist over for speeding.

The pursuit continued as the motorcycle went into Youngstown, taking the exit at Stephens Street and Salt Springs Road. At that time, the trooper lost sight of the motorcycle.

Shortly after, authorities say a Ford Mustang was turning left onto Division Street from Salt Springs Road when the motorcycle attempted to pass the Mustang and entered the oncoming lane, striking the Mustang. The motorcycle caught fire, and the rider was down on the ground.

The motorcyclist, 33-year-old Adam Mihely of Jefferson, was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The Mustang's driver wasn't injured.
