Ohioans urged to exercise caution when donating to Texas flood relief efforts

The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Finanancial Institutions is urging Ohioans to exercise caution when it comes to donating to flooding relief efforts in Texas.

According to a news release, there are some reports of scams targeting donors and victims' families. 

The release highlights the importance of ensuring donations are made through trustworthy organizations.

State or regional chapters of trusted organizations, such as the American Red Cross, United Way and Salvation Army, are recommended as reputable organizations with disaster relief credentials.

"Natural disasters often bring out the best in humanity with countless acts of generosity - but sadly, they also attract those looking to exploit the situation," said Superintendent Kevin Allard.

The Federal Trade Commission offers tips within the release that donors could follow to ensure donations go toward relief, including:

• Donating to trusted charities. Individuals should be cautious of unsolicited requests for donations.
• Conduct research. Always verify that an organization is reputable by doing a search online. Individuals may consider using the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance or Charity Watch.
• Crowdfunding caution
• Secure payment methods. Avoid making donations via cash, gift cards, wiring money, services such as Venmo or by cryptocurrency. 
• Verify text donations. Before making a donation via text, be sure to confirm the charity's number on its website to make sure it is a valid number.
