Warren, East Liverpool City Schools granted $3M to improve student literacy

Warren City Schools and East Liverpool City Schools have been awarded a total of more than $3 million in Comprehensive Literacy State Development grants.

Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin announced that the funding is part of a $60 million grant Ohio received from the U.S. Department of Education. The grants aim to support literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading framework.

Warren City Schools will receive $732,716 for grades K-5, $370,530 for grades 6-8, and $404,788 for grades 9-12. East Liverpool City Schools was awarded $816,578 for grades K-5 and $724,517 for grades 6-8.

Governor Mike DeWine stated the grants would provide students with the opportunity to improve their reading skills. Director Dackin added that the funds would help schools deliver research-based instruction.

The grants will establish comprehensive literacy sites offering literacy coaching, professional development, and daily reading instruction. Schools will also receive training for family engagement in literacy and foster partnerships with community organizations.

Thirty-three out of 174 districts and schools that applied were awarded competitive grants.  Ohio was one of 23 states to receive funding.
