SALINEVILLE, Ohio - New information has been revealed regarding former Southern Local football coach Rich Wright's resignation just six weeks before the beginning of the season.

A public records request by 21 News found that Wright was being investigated for the alleged theft of school funds from the High School Office.

According to the documents, Wright attended a meeting with the Southern Local School District board on June 27 where he was suspended without pay while the investigation was ongoing. During the meeting, Wright turned in his cell phone and was told to not contact any staff members besides the superintendent and treasurer.

He was also barred from campus and school sponsored activites, including his coaching duties.

A follow-up meeting was set for June 30, which the school board said Wright did not show up for. According to the document, Wright said he did not have legal representation set up yet and said he would contact the treasurer with the information. A meeting was rescheduled for July 1.

The school board says Wright did not show up to that meeting either and was encouraged to come to the administration building to look at video evidence and tell his side of the story.

Missing the two meetings was considered insubordination and the superintendent recommended that Wright's contracts be terminated.

Wright and the school board signed a resignation agreement on July 8.

According to the resignation agreement, the school board will pay Wright $49,683.49, representing his salary, vacation pay and other benefits.

Wright was the head coach at Southern Local for 10 years and had a record of 68-39 with seven straight playoff appearances.
