PUC: Prepare for higher electric bills after summer heat

The PUC noted that increased electricity demand across the regional power grid contributed to the usage levels.

The PUC highlighted that various cooling devices, such as air conditioners and fans, likely contributed to the increased power consumption.

The commission is encouraging Pennsylvania residents to consider strategies to manage energy costs, especially for households facing financial difficulties.

The PUC emphasized that electricity usage is a significant factor in monthly utility costs. Consumers are encouraged to:

• Examine their bills, paying attention to monthly kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage and current energy supply rates.
• For those using competitive energy suppliers, check contract expiration dates and rate terms.
• Understand options if a contract has expired or is near renewal.

The PUC urges households and small businesses experiencing difficulties with high bills or past-due balances to contact their utility providers to inquire about assistance programs. Utility customer service teams can:

• Provide information on Customer Assistance Programs for income-eligible consumers.
• Offer referrals for LIHEAP and other aid programs.
• Discuss eligibility for hardship fund support through nonprofit partnerships.
• Explore affordability options such as budget billing or payment plans.

Consumers unable to resolve issues directly with their utility can contact the PUC’s Bureau of Consumer Services at 1-800-692-7380. Pennsylvania’s 211 system (Dial 211 or visit www.pa211.org) also offers assistance for various needs, including utilities.

The PUC also shared energy conservation tips to help manage costs:
