BOARDMAN Fire crews responded to a fire in the basement of a Boardman home Friday morning.

Boardman Fire Chief Mark Pitzer tells 21 News the blaze broke out at the 7000 block of Winterberry Drive just before 9 a.m. Friday. Mutual aid was called, due to a vehicle malfunction.

Pitzer says one person was in the house sleeping when she heard the fire alarm go off and woke up to find smoke inside the home. She was able to escape safely.

When crews arrived at the scene, the fire was discovered burning in the home's basement and was extinguished quickly. Pitzer says the basement sustained "significant damage."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
