State Police say a Farrell man was fatally shot during a standoff with officers at a Mercer County hotel on Thursday.

A news release from the State Police states that 46-year-old Tyrell Silas Askerneese was shot as troopers and Shenango Township officers were serving an arrest warrant for the man at the Park Inn on New Castle Road.

SWAT units and a Crisis Intervention Response Team were also on the scene for most of the day, and later in the afternoon, the coroner and a PSP forensic trooper vehicle also arrived.

People staying at the hotel told 21 News the police presence increased throughout the day.

State police say Askerneese refused to surrender peacefully and was shot because he posed a threat to officers.

According to court records, Askerneese was arrested last month in Belmont County, Ohio on drug trafficking and other charges.

A warrant for his arrest was issued when he failed to show up for a court hearing in Ohio on Wednesday.

The incident remains under investigation.
