West Nile Virus found in more mosquitoes collected in Mercer County

West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes collected from a sample within Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

The sample, taken from Shenango Township, is the ninth positive sample of WNV to be detected in Mercer County in 2025.

According to a news release, additional monitoring will be done in the area of Shenango Township where the mosquitoes were collected.

Appropriate control work will be done depending on the type and number of mosquitoes found.

At this time, no human cases of WNV have been reported in Mercer County.

Some people may not develop symptoms of WNV. However, those who do may experience:

• Fever
• Body aches
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• A rash

People over 60 years old, or those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, kidney disease or people who have received organ transplants, are at a greater risk of developing a severe illness, according to the release.

The release states that the best way to prevent contracting WNV is to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes.

• Recommendations for how to reduce the chances of being bitten include:
• Applying insect repellants with DEET to exposed skin and clothing
• Stay indoors at dawn, dusk and early evening
• Make sure window and door-screens are bug tight
• Emptying containers with standing water in them, such as tin cans, used tires, bird baths or any receptacle capable of holding water
