YOUNGSTOWN The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) announced on Wednesday that some library locations would be experiencing temporary hours.

Beginning September 2, the Newport Branch, located at 3730 Market Street in Youngstown, will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the location will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Additionally, the current adjusted hours at the Michael Kusalaba Branch, located at 2815 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, would be extended.

The PLYMC announced temporary hours on August 4 for the Michael Kusalaba Branch, citing a security incident that occurred on July 25, 2025.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, the branch is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Wednesdays through Saturdays, the branch is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The security incident at the Michael Kusalaba Branch refers to a suspect that entered the branch, brandishing a sword and verbally threatening patrons and staff members when asked to leave.

The decision to adjust the hours is intended, according to a news release, to increase staff presence during high-traffic periods and conduct a comprehensive system-wide security review.
