WARREN The Trumbull County Commissioners will host a special meeting Friday to discuss the future of the Coalburg Lake Dam and surrounding property, bringing together local townships and conservation groups.

The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, in the Commissioners' Hearing Room on the fifth floor of the Trumbull County Administration Building, 160 High Street NW, Warren.

Commissioners Denny Malloy, Rick Hernandez, and Tony Bernard will meet with trustees from Brookfield and Hubbard Townships, along with representatives from the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Community Foundation of Eastern Ohio/Western Pennsylvania.

This discussion follows ongoing efforts by the conservancy to secure Coalburg Lake Dam. Hubbard Township Trustee Jason Tedrow previously indicated that the Land Conservancy is seeking a willing recipient to apply for grant funding to purchase the lake.

The potential acquisition includes 338 acres of property, extending up to Stewart-Sharon Road, but excludes the dam and its associated liabilities. Tedrow has stated that if trustees agree to be the recipient, the property acquisition would be at no cost to taxpayers.

The future of the dam has been a significant topic for the community, with a demolition date pushed back to 2026 after a petition from Hubbard residents in 2023 sought to save the lake.

The Western Reserve Land Conservancy has a history of donating acquired land to local entities, including partnerships with Mill Creek MetroParks for Hawkins Marsh and Springfield Forest.

No public comments will be taken at Friday's meeting.
