WARREN A union representative of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees sat down with 21 News at 5 p.m. for an interview, where he shared thoughts on the potential reopening of a Valley hospital.
The union representative, Tom Connelly, spoke on the state of unions in the Mahoning Valley, and, more specifically, the state of the unions as it involves health care workers who used to work at Insight Hospital & Medical Center Trumbull.
The hospital, located at 1350 East Market Street in Warren, closed its doors in early 2025.
Senator Bernie Moreno caught up with 21 News at the Canfield Fair during the festivities and discussed the future of Insight Hospitals.
Senator Moreno indicated that he expects the hospitals to open up in the next 30 days.
"We're really close," Moreno told 21 News. "I think that in the next thirty days, we're going to see a big announcement. We've got to get those hospitals back up and running. Of course, you never know until it's done, but we've cleared all the hurdles on the federal side, so now it's really up to the company to come in and make it happen," said Moreno.
However, Connelly told 21 News during his interview that he doesn't know where Senator Moreno received that information, or if it is accurate.
"I don't know if his information is accurate. I hope it is, I hope they're going to open soon. We're hoping that the hospital opens... A lot of the nurses are, frankly, nervous about coming back because they didn't pay us the last time they let us go," said Connelly.
Connelly went on to indicate that most of the nurses who worked at Insight have found other jobs.
"They can't afford health care. That's the bugaboo about working on your own. If you don't have health care, you can't afford to pay. You can't afford to pay COBRA for that now. And so, most of them find another job," said Connelly.
