Governor Mike DeWine issued an update on the Ohio National Guard in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.

On August 17, Governor DeWine issued a statement announcing the deployment of the troops to the area.

"These Ohio National Guard members will carry out presence patrols and serve as added security," said Governor DeWine.

According to the update, Governor DeWine agreed to a request made by the Secretary of the Army through the National Guard Bureau to allow the Ohio National Guard to remain in the District of Columbia.

Members of the Ohio National Guard will remain in Washington, D.C. until November 30, 2025.

Some members will be rotated. However, Ohio will continue to provide 150 military police to carry out presence patrols.

The deployment follows a presidential memorandum signed by President Donald Trump on August 11, in which the President called for restoring law and order in the District of Columbia.

The memorandum also authorized the Secretary of Defense to "coordinate with State Governors and authorize the orders of any additional members of the National Guard to active service."

None of the military police members are currently serving as law enforcement officers in the state of Ohio, according to the update.
