YOUNGSTOWN The Mahoning County Sheriff's Office was awarded more than $135,000 in grants from the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS) for fiscal year 2026.
Sheriff Jerry Greene announced that the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office was awarded $55,000 in Safe Communities grants and another $80,720 in Federal Traffic Safety Grants for fiscal year 2026.
The funds from the Safe Communities grants can be used for projects like traffic safety education, enforcement and engineering. Sheriff Greene is quoted in a press release saying these funds are critical to keep Mahoning County's communities safe.
"Based on crash data, we have identified speed, impaired driving, texting while driving and seat belt usage as a priority for Mahoning County and are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address this safety issue," Greene said.
To reduce these crashes, deputies with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office will be conducting high-visibility enforcement and working overtime hours.
Meanwhile, the Federal Traffic Safety Grants were awarded in two parts: $37,532 for an impaired driving enforcement program and another $43,188 for the STEP Selective Traffic Enforcement Program.
