2000: The Trumbull Campus of Kent State University celebrates the 30th anniversary of its campus in Champion Township. 

The University of Pittsburgh's Cancer Institute has formally designated UPMC's Horizon Cancer Care Program as a Pitt Regional Care Center, providing Mercer County with access to state-of-the-art treatment.

Downtown Youngstown's most eligible publicly owned building, the old First Federal Bank building, is back on the market. Still, Alden Chevlen, executive director of the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp., says it will need considerable work. 

 

1985: Trumbull County and Liberty Township have collected a combined $157,553 in lodging taxes from eight Belmont Avenue motels this year. 

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has decided against issuing a moratorium on gas or electric utility disconnections this winter, citing concerns that thousands of people would abuse it.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 5 in Warren named their campsite at the Frontier Festival at Camp Chickagami in Parkman Camp Fife in honor of a member of the troop, Raymond Fife, 12, who was murdered Sept. 12. 

 

1975: Red-faced Youngstown police begin an investigation into the theft of a 1966 automobile minutes after it was towed from the scene of a burglary and delivered to the police garage. 

A 22-year-old Jefferson Street man being held in Mahoning County Jail, awaiting trial for aggravated burglary, was stabbed in the throat while playing cards with fellow inmates. 

Youngstown Patrolmen Michael Harley and Robert Jones are overcome by smoke after entering a burning building at 929 Market St. in search of possible trapped tenants. 

 

1950: Judge John W. Ford, president of the Community Corporation and one of the Valley's most publicly spirited citizens, will be chairman of a campaign to provide a new wing of St. Elizabeth Hospital. 

South Korean forces chase broken-down Communist invaders to the 38th Parallel and are called to a halt by allied commanders.
